Saturation Physics in Ultra High Energy Cosmic Rays: Heavy Quark Production
In this work we estimate the heavy quark production in the interaction of ultra high energy cosmic rays in the atmosphere, considering that the primary cosmic ray is a proton or a photon. At these energies the saturation momentum Qsat(x) stays above the hard scale μc = 4m 2 c , implying charm production probing the saturation regime. In particular, we show that the ep HERA data presents a scali...
متن کاملSpace Time Fluctuations and Ultra High Energy Cosmic Ray Interactions
The intimate geometry of space-time is expected to suffer stochastic fluctuations as a result of quantum gravitational effects. These fluctuations may induce observable consequences on the propagation of high energy particles over large distances, so that the strength and the characteristics of these fluctuations may be constrained, mainly in the range of energies of interest for cosmic ray phy...
متن کاملDouble Pair Production by Ultra High Energy Cosmic Ray Photons
Using CompHEP package we’ve made the detailed estimate of the influence of double ee pair production (DPP) by photons on the propagation of ultra high energy electromagnetic (EM) cascade. We show that in the models in which cosmic ray photons energy reaches few×103 EeV refined DPP analysis may lead to substantial difference in predicted photon spectrum compared to previous rough estimates.
متن کاملUltra High Energy Cosmic Ray Accelerators
The surprising lack of a high energy cutoff in the cosmic ray spectrum at the highest energies together with an apparently isotropic distribution of arrival directions have strongly challenged most models proposed for the acceleration of ultra high energy cosmic rays. Young neutron star winds may be able to explain the mystery. We discuss this recent proposal after summarizing the observational...
متن کاملUltra High-Energy Cosmic Ray Observations
The year 2007 has furnished us with outstanding results about the origin of the most energetic cosmic rays: a flux suppression as expected from the GZK-effect has been observed in the data of the HiRes and Auger experiments and correlations between the positions of nearby AGN and the arrival directions of trans-GZK events have been observed by the Pierre Auger Observatory. The latter finding ma...
